Valid EU-wide.<\/li><li><strong>Category A2 from 18 years old:<\/strong> Motorcycles up to 35 kW (48 hp), max. 0.2 kW\/kg \u2013 the most popular entry-level option.<\/li><li><strong>A:<\/strong> unrestricted class with no power limit \u2013 direct access from 24 or already from 20 if you have held A2 for at least two years.<\/li><\/ul><p>Furthermore <strong>B196<\/strong>not a separate driving licence, but an endorsement on category B for 125cc motorcycles \u2013 all the details can be found in the <a href=\"\/en\/guide\/b196\/\">B196 guide<\/a>. Many people get their A1 at 16 as their very first driving licence \u2013 and unlike accompanied driving for cars, you don't need <strong>no accompanying person<\/strong>. As a first-time buyer you go through the full programme: <strong>12 double lessons of core material plus 4 double lessons of motorcycle supplementary material<\/strong> in theory, the theory test with 30 questions, practical lessons as needed and the <strong>12 special journeys<\/strong>. With your first driving licence your also starts <strong>two-year probation period<\/strong>. What is important is the second rule, which many overlook: A restricted motorcycle is only permitted for A2 if the <strong>unrestricted power output not exceeding 70 kW (approx. 95 PS)<\/strong> is (\u00a7 6 FeV). Restricting a 120 hp motorcycle down to 48 hp is therefore not permitted for A2 \u2013 anyone who rides like that is riding without a valid licence. A few honest answers to the questions many people don't dare to ask: Even at 1.60 m you can ride a motorbike \u2013 it's enough if you can safely touch the ground with the balls of your feet, and many machines have low seat heights. Even at over 100 kg, the payload capacity of modern motorbikes is practically never a problem. And strength? <strong>Technique beats muscle:<\/strong> A motorcycle isn't held up, it's balanced, and even picking it up uses leg technique, not arms. Honestly, you'll know whether it feels right for you after two or three riding lessons \u2013 quit earlier, small loss.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86i4 mff-faq-item e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"mffw86i4\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86q4 mff-faq-q elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"mffw86q4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">I wear glasses \u2013 is that a problem for the exam or helmet?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86a4 mff-faq-a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"mffw86a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>No. The <strong>eye test<\/strong> can be done with glasses or contact lenses \u2013 you just need the required prescription values <em>with<\/em> reach visual aid. Then in the driving licence is the <strong>Code 01<\/strong> (Corrective lenses required): You are required to wear glasses or contact lenses while driving \u2013 including in driving lessons and tests. In practice, this is straightforward: many helmets are <strong>suitable for glasses wearers<\/strong> (with channels in the cheek pads) \u2013 simply try on with glasses when buying a helmet. Pinlock inserts help against misted-up visors. In return, the body might need a few more hours for the basic driving manoeuvres. The learning pace is individual, not a competition. Besides, you won't be sitting in the driving school \u201eamong a bunch of 18-year-olds\u201c \u2013 in practice, the age range for motorcycle classes is broader than in any other category.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86i6 mff-faq-item e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"mffw86i6\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86q6 mff-faq-q elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"mffw86q6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Can I start before my birthday (16\/18\/24)?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86a6 mff-faq-a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"mffw86a6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Yes \u2013 and that is actually the cleverest way. Registration, theory lessons and driving lessons are allowed <strong>before<\/strong> reach the minimum age. Statutory advance deadlines apply for the examinations: The <strong>Theory test<\/strong> you may at the earliest <strong>3 months<\/strong> taking before the birthday (\u00a7 16 FeV), the <strong>practical test<\/strong> at the earliest <strong>1 month<\/strong> previously (\u00a7 17 FeV) \u2013 if you go to the licensing office on your birthday, you can theoretically hold your driving licence in your hand on the minimum age day. Important: Submit the driving licence application early (up to 6 months in advance is usual, every authority regulates this a bit differently), because without an approved application there is no theory test.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86i7 mff-faq-item e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"mffw86i7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86q7 mff-faq-q elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"mffw86q7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Am I allowed to ride on the motorway with category A1?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86a7 mff-faq-a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"mffw86a7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Yes<\/strong> \u2013 that is one of the most persistent misconceptions. Any vehicle is allowed on the motorway if, due to its design, <strong>faster than 60 km\/h<\/strong> can ride \u2013 a 125cc with 11 kW (15 hp) reaches around 100 km\/h depending on the model and easily manages that. The confusion comes from mopeds and 45 km\/h scooters (category AM), which are indeed not allowed on the motorway. What's more: during A1 training, the <strong>4 mandatory motorway rides<\/strong> \u2013 so you learn under guidance what matters there: consistently driving with foresight, overtaking decisively, and taking the slipstream of lorries seriously. For long-distance stretches, a 125cc on the motorway is no marvel of comfort \u2013 it is still permitted, though.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86i8 mff-faq-item e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"mffw86i8\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86q8 mff-faq-q elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"mffw86q8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Class A from 21 already: What does code 80 mean?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86a8 mff-faq-a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"mffw86a8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <strong>Code 80<\/strong> is it written on the driving licence if you already have category A <strong>from 21 upwards<\/strong> made. Their wording in Appendix 9 FeV: \u201eOnly for holders of a driving licence for three-wheeled motor vehicles of category A who have not yet reached the age of 24.\u201c<\/p><p>Don't be fooled by the wording: <strong>Training and testing take place on a normal Class A machine<\/strong> (Appendix 7 FeV: at least 50 kW and 600 cm\u00b3). Up to the age of 24 you ride motorcycles up to 48 hp with it via the included class A2.<\/p><p><strong>With your 24th birthday, the code number ceases to apply<\/strong> \u2013 without a new test, without an application. After that, category A is valid without restriction.<\/p><p>If you are between 21 and 24 and want to start riding a motorcycle anyway, this is usually the best way: training, one test, and you are on the machine from the start that you want to ride later.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86i9 mff-faq-item e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"mffw86i9\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86q9 mff-faq-q elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"mffw86q9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">I have the old Category 3 driving licence \u2013 am I allowed to ride 125cc motorcycles?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-mffw86a9 mff-faq-a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"mffw86a9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>That depends on the key date <strong>1 April 1980<\/strong>: Was your old category 3 licence <strong>before<\/strong> issued, when exchanging it for the photocard driving licence you will get <strong>Category A1 with code 79.05<\/strong> \u2013 so you're allowed to ride 125cc bikes, even without the otherwise applicable 0.1 kW\/kg limit, plus trikes. Was class 3 <strong>from 1 April 1980<\/strong> granted, there is no A1 included \u2013 then the way leads through <a href=\"\/en\/guide\/b196\/\">B196<\/a> (from 25, without a test) or the real A1. Without this test, you will permanently remain at 48 hp, no matter how many years pass. For preparation, a few practical lessons on the unrestricted motorcycle are sensible \u2013 you plan these individually with your driving school.
