Driving lesson meeting point
Practical training starts centrally in Frankfurt-Kalbach, near the TÜV. There is significantly less traffic there than in the city, making the first steps on the motorcycle easier. The practical test usually begins at the relevant test centre; the specific route is determined by the examiner.

Age, previous ownership and goals are things we will clarify together – without an appointment in one of our four branches or right here via the class finder.
Advise and pre-register
Online you pre-register without obligation. You complete the binding registration in person at the branch. For the initial consultation and registration, a valid identity document is sufficient to begin with. You then submit the documents for the driving licence application.
complete theory and practical training
For A, A1 and A2 the regular driving licence training consisting of basic material and motorcycle supplementary material. For B196 the prescribed driver training.
Examination or training completion
With A, A1 and A2 there is a theoretical and a practical test – with tier progression only the practical one. With B196 there is no driving licence test, but rather the training certificate and the entry of code number 196.
Which category suits you?
A
Unrestricted motorcycle category with no power limit
From 24 by direct entry – or from 20 if you have held category A2 for at least two years. All motorcycles, no power limit. From as early as 21, category A is possible with code 80 (A80): category A2 motorcycles until 24, then automatically any motorcycle.
A2
Entry from 18 to 35 kW
From 18 years of age. Up to 35 kW (around 48 bhp) and a maximum of 0.2 kW per kilogram of unladen weight. After two years on the A2 licence, the practical test is sufficient for the full A category.
A1
Regular 125cc licence from 16
From 16 years of age. Up to 125 cm³, 11 kW and 0.1 kW per kilogram of unladen weight. Standard driving licence category with a progression route to A2.
B196
125cc upgrade for experienced drivers
From the age of 25, if you have held category B for at least five years. No separate licence category and no driving test – just rider training. Only applies domestically and is not a stepping stone to A1 or A2.

Equipment
Fully equipped for your driving lesson
On two wheels, your clothing is your crumple zone. Here is what you need:
- motorcycle helmet – well-fitting and ECE-approved. It must not be possible to pull it off when the chin strap is fastened.
- Motorcycle gloves – real motorcycle gloves, not work or winter gloves.
- Motorcycle jacket – close-fitting; we strongly recommend protectors in the jacket and trousers.
- Suitable motorcycle trousers.
- Motorcycle boots or sturdy footwear with ankle protection.
- Back protector, unless it is already in the jacket.
For your motorcycle lessons and the practical test, you need full, suitable protective motorcycle clothing. With complete gear, every lesson can start as planned.
It is best to get your protective clothing yourself – if need be, we have individual items available, by arrangement. For the test, it must be complete and fit properly.

Which motorcycle category is right for me?

What is the difference between A1 and B196?
Both lead to the 125cc. The A1 is a standard driving licence category: available from the age of 16, requiring a theory and practical test, and offering a pathway to the A2 licence at a later stage. Anyone under the age of 18 should check, before travelling abroad, whether the country in question already recognises the German A1 driving licence. B196 This is not a separate driving licence category, but an extension of your Category B licence: available from the age of 25 and after holding a Category B licence for five years, without the need to take a driving test. It is generally valid only in Germany and does not provide a standard route to upgrading to Categories A1, A2 or A. By way of comparison: B196 or A1?
Where do the motorbike lessons take place?
Central departure from the Frankfurt-Kalbach meeting point, near the TÜV – regardless of which branch you register at. Consultation and registration take place at the branch that suits you best; you attend the basic theory lessons at all branches that offer theory lessons and the supplementary motorcycle theory always in Bockenheim.
When can I start my practical training?
You can register, apply for your licence and start theory at any time of year; the motorcycle-specific theory also runs regularly outside the season. We plan the start of your riding lessons together with you at your consultation – to suit the weather and the season.
Do I need my own protective clothing?
Full protective clothing is compulsory for riding lessons and the test. It is best to get your protective clothing yourself – if need be, we have individual items available, by arrangement.
Can I register online with a binding commitment?
You register online without obligation Go ahead. You must complete the binding registration in person at one of the four branches. For the initial consultation and registration, a valid form of identification is sufficient for the time being. You will then submit the documents required for your driving licence application.
Can I do the course in English?
The practical part, yes: riding lessons are available in German and – depending on availability – in English. Theory lessons are held in German. Just let us know during the consultation, and we will plan accordingly.
How much does a motorbike licence cost?
