Four steps on your way to your motorcycle

Station 1

Age, previous ownership and goals are things we will clarify together – without an appointment in one of our four branches or right here via the class finder.

Station 2

Advise and pre-register

Online you pre-register without obligation. You complete the binding registration in person at the branch. For the initial consultation and registration, a valid identity document is sufficient to begin with. You then submit the documents for the driving licence application.

Station 3

complete theory and practical training

For A, A1 and A2 the regular driving licence training consisting of basic material and motorcycle supplementary material. For B196 the prescribed driver training.

Station 4

Examination or training completion

With A, A1 and A2 there is a theoretical and a practical test – with tier progression only the practical one. With B196 there is no driving licence test, but rather the training certificate and the entry of code number 196.

Organisation

This is how your motorcycle training is organised at FAHRPLAN

Consultancy, theory and practice are not in the same place – that is intentional. Here you can see what takes place where.

Advice and registrationIn all four Frankfurt branches: Heddernheim, Dornbusch, Bockenheim and Sachsenhausen. No appointment necessary, during opening hours. For the initial consultation and registration, a valid identity document is sufficient to begin with. You then submit the documents for your driving licence application – this is a separate, subsequent step with the authority.
Theory for A, A1 and A2You attend the basic theory lessons at selected branches – you can join the ongoing topic cycle on any available lesson day. For a first-time driving licence, this is twelve double lessons, or usually six if you already hold a driving licence category. In addition, there are four double lessons of supplementary motorcycle theory.
Motorcycle additiveFour double periods, in Bockenheim. They run seasonally, usually from about March to October.
Training for B196B196 works differently: instead of basic syllabus and a driving test, you complete a dedicated driver training course of at least nine teaching units of 90 minutes each – comprising at least four theory and at least five practical units. The practical training is conducted on a one-to-one basis. There is no standard basic syllabus training or driving test with B196.
PracticeCentral meeting point in Frankfurt-Kalbach, near the TÜV. There is significantly less traffic there than in the city – this makes the first few hours on the motorcycle much easier.
ExamThe practical test usually begins at the responsible test centre. The route taken is determined by the examiner – we cannot guarantee a specific route for you.

Equipment

Fully equipped for your driving lesson

On two wheels, your clothing is your crumple zone. Here is what you need:

  • motorcycle helmet – well-fitting and ECE-approved. It must not be possible to pull it off when the chin strap is fastened.
  • Motorcycle gloves – real motorcycle gloves, not work or winter gloves.
  • Motorcycle jacket with protectors.
  • Suitable motorcycle trousers.
  • Motorcycle boots or sturdy footwear with ankle protection.
  • Back protector, unless it is already in the jacket.

For your motorbike lessons and the practical test, you’ll need a full set of suitable protective motorbike clothing. Without the correct kit, FAHRPLAN will not allow you to take a lesson or sit the practical test.

You don’t have to buy everything straight away. Individual items of protective clothing may be hired, subject to size and availability – please check this with us before your first riding lesson. For the test, your protective clothing must be complete and a good fit; we recommend wearing your own clothing for reasons of fit and getting used to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

In a nutshell

Which motorcycle category is right for me?

That depends on your age and whether you’re already in a class. The Class Finder The link above will take you to the right option in just a few clicks. Find out more in the guide: Which category is right for me?

What is the difference between A1 and B196?

Both lead to the 125cc. The A1 is a standard driving licence category: available from the age of 16, requiring a theory and practical test, and offering a pathway to the A2 licence at a later stage. Anyone under the age of 18 should check, before travelling abroad, whether the country in question already recognises the German A1 driving licence. B196 This is not a separate driving licence category, but an extension of your Category B licence: available from the age of 25 and after holding a Category B licence for five years, without the need to take a driving test. It is generally valid only in Germany and does not provide a standard route to upgrading to Categories A1, A2 or A. By way of comparison: B196 or A1?

Where do the motorbike lessons take place?

Central departure from the Frankfurt-Kalbach meeting point, near the TÜV – regardless of which branch you register at. Consultation and registration take place at the branch that suits you best; theory lessons are held at selected branches.

When can I start my practical training?

You can enrol, apply for a driving licence and start the theory course at any time of year. The additional motorbike module runs seasonally from around March to October. When your driving lessons start also depends on the weather and current booking levels – we’ll let you know what to expect during your consultation.

Do I need my own protective clothing?

Individual items can be hired depending on size and availability – please speak to us before your first riding lesson. For the test, protective clothing must be complete and a good fit; we recommend wearing your own clothing for reasons of fit and getting used to it.

Can I register online with a binding commitment?

No. You register online without obligation Go ahead. You must complete the binding registration in person at one of the four branches. For the initial consultation and registration, a valid form of identification is sufficient for the time being. You will then submit the documents required for your driving licence application.

Can I do the course in English?

Yes. We provide training in German and English. Just let us know during the consultation, and we will plan accordingly.

How much does a motorbike licence cost?

All the price components are listed openly on the Pricing page. How much it comes to in the end depends primarily on the number of your practice lessons. In the guide, we work it out: Costs and duration.
