Frequently asked questions about the motorcycle licence
The most important answers concerning classes, procedure, costs and training – brief and honest. Detailed questions about individual classes can also be found on the respective class pages.
Driving licence categories
Which motorcycle category is right for me?
From 16 you start with A1 (125cc). From 18 you can do A2 (up to 48 hp) – the most popular entry level. You can ride the unrestricted category A directly from age 20 or from 20 after two years of A2 via progressive access. And if you are over 25 and have held a car driving licence for at least 5 years, maybe you only need B196 for the 125cc. If in doubt, drop by and we'll figure it out together.
Can I go straight for the unrestricted Category A licence?
Yes – from the age of 24, direct entry is possible without any detours. If you are younger, the route is via A2 and, after two years, the upgrade test.
What is the difference between A1 and B196?
A1 is a real driving licence: valid EU-wide, with theory and practical tests, and upgradeable later on. B196 is an endorsement on your car driving licence: no tests, only valid in Germany, not upgradeable – but quicker and for a fixed price.
Am I allowed to ride on the motorway with category A1?
Yes – that is one of the most common misconceptions. A 125cc motorbike is allowed on the motorway, and the 4 special motorway training rides are even compulsory during instruction. Details in Class Guide.
Does an A2 licence automatically upgrade to the open A licence after two years?
No. After two years on A2, however, the practical upgrade test (60 minutes) is sufficient – without a theory test and without mandatory lessons. Everything else in Promotion guide.
Is B196 valid abroad?
No – B196 is valid exclusively in Germany, not even in Austria. Anyone who wants to drive abroad needs the real A1. Background details in B196 guide.
Theory and practice
When and where does the motorcycle-specific theory take place?
The basic module runs at selected branches and can be started at any time. The four double lessons of additional motorcycle theory take place in Bockenheim, seasonally from approx. March to October.
Can I drive before the theory test?
Yes! Theory and driving lessons run concurrently – you don't have to wait. You can only take the theory test once your driving licence application has been processed by the authorities.
What happens in winter?
Practical training takes place depending on the weather from around March to the end of October. Winter is the ideal preparation time: sign up, hand in your paperwork, do the theory – and when the season starts, you'll be the first one on the bike.
In which languages can I take the theory test?
The official theory test is available at TÜV in 12 languages – including English, Turkish, Arabic and French. Our lessons are held in German; our driving instructors also support you in English.
How many riding lessons do I need?
Only the 12 special driving lessons are legally required – all other practice lessons depend on your ability. Those who already drive a car often get by with a single-digit number; without prior experience, more is completely normal. Honest figures in Apprenticeship guide.
What clothes do I need for driving lessons and the test?
Complete protective clothing: ECE helmet, motorcycle gloves, jacket, trousers, back protector and sturdy footwear with ankle protection – without them the test will not take place, and you will also wear them for every riding lesson. For the start, you can borrow equipment from us (see below). Details in Protective Clothing Guide.
Costs and duration
How long does the training take?
Usually 1–3 months. The crucial factors are the authority application (submit early!), the weather, and your appointment availability.
How much does the motorcycle licence cost in total?
A reliable total sum cannot be stated globally for the motorcycle classes subject to testing, as the required practice lessons are individual. The components: basic fee €439, practice lesson (45 mins.) €75, special ride (45 mins.) €85, test entries €110 (theory) and €175/€165 (practical), learning app €40. Exception B196: €750 complete for the entire training with us. All details on the Pricing page.
How much does a failed attempt cost?
Every new attempt incurs the test presentation fee again (at our place €110 for theory or €175/€165 for practical) plus the official TÜV fee – plus, sensibly, one or two refresher lessons. Better one more practice lesson before the test than a failed attempt.
How many times can I retake the exam?
As often as necessary – there is no 3-attempt limit (a stubborn myth). There is usually at least a two-week gap between attempts; the passed theory test is valid for 12 months. The complete plan: Failed – what now?
Apprenticeship at FAHRPLAN
Where do the driving lessons start?
For all locations, meeting point in Kalbach, very close to the TÜV: quiet streets for the basic driving manoeuvres instead of city centre traffic jams. You'll take your test later with TÜV Kalbach – so right in the area you know from your driving lessons.
Can I hire protective clothing?
Full protective clothing is compulsory for riding lessons and the test. Our recommendation: get your own gear even before the first riding lesson. In exceptional cases we will see if we can provide you with missing protective clothing – just talk to us.
Can I switch from another driving school?
Yes, a transfer is possible at any time. Bring your training record with you to the registration meeting – we will look together at where you are and how things can continue seamlessly.
Is training also provided in English?
Yes, upon request your training can also be conducted in English.
Can I get my car and motorcycle licence at the same time?
Yes, that works – the basic theory material counts for both classes.
From when can I register?
At any time and without an appointment in one of our four branches – even before the minimum age. You can attend theory lessons immediately and take the theory test at the earliest 3 months before your birthday.
Which motorcycles will I learn on with you?
Depending on the category on Honda machines: CB125 (A1), CB500 (A2) and CB650 (unrestricted category A) – all fitted with radios and insured, with crash bars for the training phase.
