Failed your motorcycle test – what now?

Nationwide, across all licence categories, roughly a quarter of practical tests are failed. For the motorcycle categories, the situation is much better – most candidates already have driving and traffic experience, with around 90 percent passing category A in most driving schools. But precisely for that reason, failing on a motorcycle often feels particularly bad: „Everyone is passing, except me.“ The truth is more unexciting: An exam measures 70 minutes of daily form, not your talent and not your future as a motorcycle rider. Nervousness, an unfortunate moment at a junction, a foot on the ground during the slalom – that is what decides between passing and coming back, not between being suitable and unsuitable. Every motorcycle instructor knows pupils who have passed with flying colours on their second attempt and are the better riders today – because they know more precisely what matters.

First things first: You may repeat as often as you like. The persistent story about the ban or the idiot test after three failed attempts is a myth - there is no upper limit in the Driving Licence Ordinance (§ 18 FeV). Between the attempts there is a waiting period of as a rule at least two weeks. Your passed theory test remains valid – but its clock is ticking: 12 months from passing Have you got time to do the practical test, otherwise you will also have to retake the theory test. Your special driving lessons and your entire training also remain valid – you only retake the test, not the driving school. There is a special rule for motorcycles: If the failed attempt is at the end of the season, do not plan the second attempt for „sometime in the spring“, but calculate the 12-month deadline precisely.

As a rough guide you should with around 200 euros factor in for the new attempt: the official test fee from the testing body plus the driving school's presentation fee – both of which apply again for every attempt (the exact amounts vary depending on the region and driving school). In addition, it makes sense to one or two focused refresher riding lessons. What does NOT apply: no new basic fee, no new special driving lessons, no new theory (as long as the 12 months are running). The failed attempt is therefore annoying, but it is Price for a second attempt – not for a fresh start. For comparison: all your previous training is still inside you unchanged; only an exam date has been lost.

The most valuable step after failing costs nothing: the conversation straight after. The examiner states the decisive reason, your driving instructor saw the entire drive – together, both result in a clear picture. The most frequent patterns: mistakes in the basic driving exercises (foot put down, cone knocked over, emergency braking too hesitant), the forgotten shoulder check when changing lanes or turning, right-of-way and traffic light errors due to nervousness – or the underestimated opposite: driving too hesitantly, which does not demonstrate a safe driving style to the examiner. Important for your mindset: state the reason precisely („I forgot to do the shoulder check when turning“) instead of generally („I just can't do it“). A specific mistake is trainable – a blanket judgement is not.

How to turn the waiting period to your advantage:

• Week 1: Let the error analysis sink in, schedule the new test date and 1–2 targeted driving lessons with the driving instructor – focusing only on the point where it went wrong.
• Week 2: Doing driving lesson(s). Was it a basic driving manoeuvre: practice until it becomes boring – routine beats nervousness. Was it a driving error: deliberately head straight into situations exactly like that.
• Exam day: same routine as in driving lessons, be there early, warm up if possible – and in case of doubt, it's better to ask once (asking via radio is allowed and not a mistake).

There are two mistakes you should avoid: the appointment rush things, before the cause is trained – and him putting it off forever, although deadlines, season and confidence work against it. Two to four weeks after the failed attempt is the sweet spot for most. Only register when your driving instructor thinks you are ready for the test – their assessment is the best prediction available.

After failing, many people are less concerned about the retake than the question: „What is everyone thinking now?“ The honest answer: surprisingly little. Nobody keeps a tally of test attempts, your driving licence doesn't state how many tries it took, and at your driving school you're just this week's normal case, not the year's exception. Besides, among motorcyclists, the phrase „I failed the first time“ almost always triggers the same reaction: a story of their own about their own test. Anyone who looks down on you for a failed attempt has simply forgotten what a test situation feels like. You don't have to tell anyone – but you'll notice: it's easier to talk about than you think.

There is a sober plan for this too, instead of panic. After the second or third failed attempt, it is worth looking at the system, not at yourself: Is it always the same thing going wrong? Then precisely this point needs different training – sometimes a different training environment, a different training motorcycle (seat height and weight make a real difference) or a different driving instructor with a different explanatory style helps; all of that is legitimate and no affront. Is it the nervousness every time? Then mental preparation is the key: test simulation during the driving lesson, fixed routines, realistic expectations. Legally, nothing changes: no ban, no additional test, no limit. And the 12-month theory deadline remains the only real countdown – keep an eye on it and talk openly with your driving school about the planning.
