How much does the motorcycle licence cost? Three honest sample calculations

The motorcycle licence does not have a fixed price because the biggest cost block depends on you: Practice sessions. Only the special driving lessons are required by law – how many practice sessions you need before that depends on prior experience, talent and the frequency of practice. Therefore: A modular calculation is serious business, where you know every single item – any fixed price that is calculated with an unrealistically low number of hours and ends up being more expensive through recounts than the honest quote is untrustworthy. All figures here are nationwide orders of magnitude (As of 2026), between major cities and the countryside, between federal states and driving schools, there are real differences.

Every motorcycle licence invoice consists of the same parts:

• basic fee driving school (registration, theory lessons, administration): several hundred euros depending on the region.
• Practice sessions (45 minutes each): the variable block – from a handful to well into double figures.
• 12 special journeys upon initial acquisition or extension (5 cross-country, 4 motorway, 3 night), usually with a surcharge compared to the standard driving lesson.
• Inspection feesTheory test (low double-digit amount) and practical test – for the latter, including the driving school's presentation fee, you should expect in the region of around €200.

Realistic total range for the training: around €2,200 to €3,200, plus the protective clothing. The honest comfort for parents: part of it is an investment in their future driving licence career – anyone who later gets a category B licence will save on theory hours as a licence holder, and the traffic experience gained from two years of riding a 125cc is practically priceless.

The standard case: late twenties or older, driving a car for years, now the motorcycle. You save money in three places – half the core theory syllabus (6 + 4 double lessons), minor theory test (20 questions), no new first aid course – and bring driving experience that saves on lesson hours: many category B licence holders need fewer than ten before moving on to the 12 mandatory special drives. Realistic total range: around €1,800 to €2,800 plus protective clothing. The variance is almost entirely explained by the hours of practice – anyone who brings a two-wheeler feel from a bicycle or scooter ends up at the lower end.

The process is similar to the A2 route – half the basic training and a short theory test also apply here (provided you hold a Class B licence) – with two differences: the training takes place on the large, open machine, the performance of which requires a little more getting used to, and the practical test, at 70 minutes, takes just as long, but requires six basic manoeuvring exercises on the heavier motorcycle. Realistic overall range: around €1,900 to €3,000 plus protective clothing. For comparison, it is worth looking at progressive access: category A2 now and in two years' time the promotion exam – spreads the cost, but requires a second inspection.

The three most common cost drivers: More training sessions than planned – completely normal and no failure, but to be factored in as a buffer in the budget planning (two, three extra hours quickly add up to €200). An unsuccessful attempt for the practical test: around €200 plus refresher lessons – annoying, but not starting from scratch. And the most avoidable one: the expired theory test – anyone who delays the practical training for more than 12 months after the theory test pays and learns twice. What doesn't break the bank, on the other hand: the season. Motorcycle training runs from about March to October depending on the weather – that takes planning, not money.

Smart saving: Timing (register in winter, get theory and paperwork done in advance – free of charge and effective), second-hand jacket, trousers, boots (completely fine, if suitable and undamaged), comparison of the module prices instead of the bargain-bait offers. False economy: at the helmet (always new – no exception), during the practice sessions (those who enter the test half-prepared pay for the failed attempt plus retraining – the supposedly saved hours come back twofold) and at driving schools whose price lists do not mention all items.
