Motorcycle theory: lessons, exam and the 12-month period

How many compulsory hours there are, how the test works, how long it remains valid and how to study efficiently – everything you need to know about the theory for your motorcycle licence.

How many theory lessons do I need – with and without a category B licence?

This is clearly regulated by the driving school training regulations: During Initial purchase are they 12 double lessons of basic material plus 4 double periods of motorcycle supplementary training – 16 in total. If you already have a driving licence (e.g. category B), the basic material is halved to 6 double lessons, the additive remains: together 10. A double lesson lasts 90 minutes. When which basic substance is running, you can see in the Theory schedule of the FAHRPLAN driving school. The motorcycle supplement deals precisely with the topics that are not covered in car lessons: riding physics on two wheels, protective clothing, and the specific aspects of road conditions and visibility. The order is flexible – you can take riding lessons parallel to your theory lessons, and in many driving schools the lessons run on a rolling basis, so you can join at any time.

How does the theory test for the motorcycle licence work?

You take the theory test theory test at TÜV or DEKRA as for; your driving school usually books the appointment as soon as your application is approved. When Initial purchase do you answer 30 questions and may a maximum of 10 penalty points collect – Warning: If you answer two questions with a weight of 5 wrongly, you will also have failed with under 10 points. If you already have a driving licence (e.g. category B), it is only 20 questions with a maximum of 6 penalty points. There are also video questions. Time frame: maximum of 45 minutes – well-prepared candidates are usually finished after 10 to 15 minutes, and you get the result immediately. The passed theory test is Valid for 12 monthsDuring this time you have to pass the practical test, otherwise you have to start all over again.

How long is the passed theory test valid?

12 months – within this time you must pass the practical test (§ 18 FeV). If you fail to do so, the theory test expires completely: new test, new fee – regardless of how narrowly you missed the deadline. The second deadline in the background: After passing the overall test, your driving licence must be issued to you within 2 years be handed out. In terms of planning, this means not letting the theoretical and practical training drift too far apart – particularly in the case of motorbikes, with their weather-dependent season Taking a theory test in late autumn can put unnecessary pressure on the 12-month timeframe. Ideally, you should pass the theory test in winter or spring and complete the practical part in the same season.

Can I take the theory test in English or in other languages?

Yes. The official theory test is available in 12 languages – as well as German, these include English, Turkish, Arabic, Russian, Spanish and French, amongst others. You choose the language when you register for the exam; the content of the questions is identical. The standard Educational apps offer the official question bank in multiple languages – it is sensible to study in the language in which you will also be tested. The theorylessons In contrast, driver training usually takes place in German, though many driving schools also offer support in English – just ask beforehand.

How is the best way to study for the motorcycle theory test?

With system instead of a marathon: learning app with the official question bank (you get this through your driving school), 20–30 minutes a day for two to three weeks – that beats any last-minute cramming session. Three things make motorcycle theory special: the motorcycle-specific questions (riding physics, protective clothing, leaning into bends – new territory for car drivers), which Video questions, where you answer traffic situations only after playing, and which Fault-point logicQuestions with a value of 5 (often right of way) decide whether you pass or fail – you need to know them for sure, not guess. Get your app statistics to a consistent over 90 percent passed exam simulations – then the real appointment is a formality.

My theory test runs out before I pass my practical – what happens then?

Then unfortunately the theory starts all over again: After the expiry of 12 months the passed test lapses completely – new test, new fee; your knowledge is still there, but the proof is gone. Motorbike learners in particular fall into this trap when they pass the theory in late summer and postpone the practical test „until next season“: the winter break plus processing times at the authorities and test appointments use up the 12 months faster than expected. How to avoid this: plan practical lessons early and make them binding, don't leave the special drives until the end, and talk openly to the driving school if you foresee a shortage of time – they know the appointment situation at the TÜV and can set priorities. And if it does happen: no big deal, but an avoidable detour.
