Motorcycle theory: lessons, exam and the 12-month period

This is clearly set out in the driving school training regulations: a first-time licence requires 12 double lessons of basic theory plus 4 double lessons of motorcycle-specific theory – 16 in total. If you already hold a driving licence (e.g. category B), the basic theory is halved to 6 double lessons, while the motorcycle-specific theory stays the same: 10 in total. The motorcycle-specific theory covers exactly the topics that do not come up in car lessons: riding physics on two wheels, protective clothing, and the particular features of road conditions and visibility. The order is flexible – you can start riding lessons while theory lessons are still running, and at many driving schools the lessons run on a rolling basis, so you can join at any time.

You take the theory test on a computer at the TÜV at Römerhof in Frankfurt – your driving school usually books the appointment as soon as your application is approved. For a first-time licence you answer 30 questions and are allowed no more than 10 penalty points – note: if you answer two questions worth 5 points each incorrectly, you fail even though you are still within the 10-point limit. If you already hold a driving licence (e.g. category B), it is only 20 questions with a maximum of 6 penalty points. There are also video questions. There is no time limit – well-prepared candidates are usually finished after 10 to 15 minutes, and you get your result immediately. A passed theory test is valid for 12 months: you must pass the practical test within this time, otherwise you have to start all over again.

Ideally, you should pass the theory test in winter or spring and complete the practical part in the same season.

Yes. The official theory test exists also in a foreign language – as well as German, these include English, Turkish, Arabic, Russian, Spanish and French, amongst others. You choose the language when you register for the exam; the content of the questions is identical. The standard Educational apps offer the official question bank in multiple languages – it is sensible to study in the language in which you will also be tested. The theorylessons In contrast, driver training usually takes place in German, though many driving schools also offer support in English – just ask beforehand.

Then unfortunately the theory starts all over again: After the expiry of 12 months the passed test lapses completely – new test, new fee; your knowledge is still there, but the proof is gone. Motorbike learners in particular fall into this trap when they pass the theory in late summer and postpone the practical test „until next season“: the winter break plus processing times at the authorities and test appointments use up the 12 months faster than expected. How to avoid this: plan practical lessons early and make them binding, don't leave the special drives until the end, and talk openly to the driving school if you foresee a shortage of time – they know the appointment situation at the TÜV and can set priorities. And if it does happen: no big deal, but an avoidable detour.
