Test day: This is how the practical motorcycle test really goes
Most exam anxiety doesn’t come from the exam itself, but from the unknown elements of it. That is why here is the whole day, step by step – from the night before to the moment you hear your result.
The night before
Three things you do the night before so the morning stays stress-free: Have the paperwork ready (ID card – no exam without proof of identity; in addition to what your driving school tells you), the full protective clothing check and provide (ECE-certified helmet, gloves, jacket, trousers, back protector, sturdy footwear with ankle protection – the test will not take place without complete gear) and Early to bed. What you should no longer do the evening before: watch new tech videos or play through disasters in your head. Your skills won't change in the last twelve hours – your sleep will.
Arrival and paperwork
You usually meet your driving instructor a little earlier – many learner drivers do a short [drive/warm-up] before the test Warm-up session, to get both machine and nerves up to operating temperature; that's not a must, but a good investment. At the test location, the examiner will greet you and check your Identity card and the paperwork. In total, for the examination 70 minutes scheduled (at 60 minutes for the practical test), of which at least 30 minutes is actual driving time – the rest is made up of the greeting, vehicle safety check, basic driving manoeuvres and the debrief. By the way, the examiner is not your enemy: they want to see that you drive safely – not that you are perfect.
The pre-departure check
Before setting off, the examiner will randomly ask you two or three questions about the bike itselfTyres (tread depth, tyre pressure), chain (tension, lubrication), brakes (lever travel, fluid level), test all lights, demonstrate the engine kill switch – all things you will have picked up along the way from your driving lessons. The important context: An uncertain answer is not a ground for failure; the vehicle safety check is factored into the overall assessment, but it is not a knock-out criterion. After that, helmet on, radio check – and it's time for the basic riding exercises.
The basic riding manoeuvres
On a smooth surface you drive the basic driving exercises: for direct entry and when extending an existing licence six, in the promotion exam four – which ones is up to the examiner (slalom, emergency braking and swerving are compulsory, alongside alternatives such as riding at walking pace or stop-and-go). The most reassuring rule of the day: You can repeat up to three failed manoeuvres once each. So a wobble isn't a disaster – take a quick moment to gather yourself, then have another go. You can find all the details for every single task, including the technique and typical mistakes, in the guide. Basic driving manoeuvres explained in full.
The driving test
Then comes the longest part: at least 30 minutes riding in real traffic. You lead the way – the examiner follows in the car along with your driving instructor and tells you the route by radio („Turn right at the next junction“). Three things that many people don't know: Asking questions is allowed and no error if an announcement was unclear. If no announcement comes, the following applies: follow the road. And a single small mistake doesn't end anything – the overall picture of your drive is assessed: looking ahead and checking your blind spot, right of way, speed appropriate to the situation (lively where the road is clear – driving too hesitantly is a common mistake!), following distance, lane selection. Drive like in a good driving lesson, not like in a special performance.
The result – and what happens next
Back at the starting point, there is the result immediately, with a brief explanation. If you pass, depending on the region, the examiner hands you the directly photographic driving licence or a provisional test certificate off – you are allowed to drive from this moment (the certificate is valid domestically). Remember on the first day: For first-time licence holders, the two-year probation period. And if it doesn't work out: the examiner will tell you the reason – listen carefully, because that is the basis for your second attempt. How things proceed from there (waiting period, costs, plan) is in the guide Failed – what now?
Three mental tricks that really help
1. The test is a driving lesson with an audience. You're driving the same roads, the same machine, with your driving instructor behind you – the only new thing is a listener in the car. Drive the routine, not the show. The next mistake is allowed. If someone mentally gives up after a wobble („now everything's ruined anyway“), that's when they make the actual mistakes. Examiners assess the overall picture – a calm and confident reaction to a small mistake is actually a plus point. 3. Breathe at every red traffic light. Red traffic light phases are built-in breaks: relax your shoulders, take a deep breath, sort your thoughts. Nobody can maintain tension for 70 minutes – everyone can for 70 minutes with built-in mini-breaks.
