Theory test failed: How to pass next time

Failing the theory test is not a marginal phenomenon: nationwide – across all driving licence categories – almost every second theory test (TÜV-Verband, most recently around 44 per cent). The question bank has grown over the years and is continuously updated; the test is harder today than it was in your parents' day. A failed attempt therefore says nothing about your suitability as a motorcyclist – but it does say something about your learning method. And that can be changed.

• Unlimited attempts: There is no three-attempt limit or three-month ban – both are myths (§ 18 FeV).
• Waiting period: usually at least two weeks until the next appointment.
• You don't have to retake the theory lessons: Your theory lessons remain valid – the completion just must not be more than 2 years ago at the time of the test.
• Cost: once again the official test fee plus the driving school's test presentation fee – annoying, but manageable. Only one thing gets expensive: retaking the test unprepared.

• The 5-point-question trap: Two incorrect questions worth 5 points (almost always right of way) automatically mean a failure – even if your penalty points are below the limit. This is the most common „inexplicable“ reason for failing.
• Started too early: „Let's see if it works“ is an expensive bet at these odds.
• Clicking through on autopilot: Looking at questions is not learning – only active answering with error correction builds knowledge.
• The repeat student trap: Anyone who simply „goes back again“ and learns just like before fails again above average. Same method, same result.

• 1. Error analysis: The exam evaluation shows your weak topics – focus precisely on those, don't revise the whole syllabus.
• 2. Nail down the 5-point questions: All right-of-way and 5-point questions must be nailed down – you need to know them, not guess.
• 3. Practise video questions: Watch clips multiple times (also allowed in the actual test): first the overall picture, then details like signs, traffic lights, pedestrians.
• 4. The strict benchmark: Only book the retest once you several complete exam simulations in a row passed over the course of several days, without any tier-5 double faults. Passing one simulation is luck, passing five in a row is skill.
• 5. Two weeks consistently: 20 to 30 minutes every day beats any cramming session the night before.

Two things distinguish your exam from the classic car: Firstly, the Motorcycle additive – Questions on vehicle dynamics, protective clothing and motorcycle specifics that car drivers have never seen. They are fair, but must be learned independently. Secondly, the good news for anyone with a car driving licence: you are doing the Extension exam with only 20 questions and a maximum of 6 penalty points – shorter, but with less of a buffer: a single major blunder weighs more heavily. The value-5 rule applies just as much here.

• Theory completion: must not date back more than two years at the time of the exam – with a prompt retake, this is never a problem.
• Audit brief: valid for about 1 year in administrative practice – check back in the event of longer breaks.
• Upon passing: 12 months to take the practical test – plan ahead for motorbikes with seasonal license platesWinter strategy).

Can I see which questions I got wrong? You get an evaluation broken down by subject area – the exact exam questions you do not get. That is completely sufficient for the analysis.

Can I change the language on the next attempt? Yes – the exam is available in 12 languages. However, make sure you study consistently in the new exam language.

Do I need to take new theory lessons? No – but going over the topics on additives voluntarily never hurts. Speak to your driving school.

And what if I fail multiple times? Even then: no limit, no MPU. But by now at the latest, a change of method is worthwhile – together with the driving school instead of alone with the app.
